Project Details
Description: Historic preservation has been significant in the planning of Decatur since at least 1982. One major goal of historic preservation was to integrate new construction with existing cornice heights in the downtown epicenter. The Decatur Historic Preservation was created in 1990 to educate and advocate for preserving the old charm of Decatur and its structures. Each homeowner is encouraged to understand how they may participate in Decatur’s particular architectural character. This circa 1930’s single family residence with three small bedrooms and one bathroom was demolished to make way for new residential infill.

Scope: To begin this project the first task was to demolish the existing structure. A single family home with five bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, a huge front porch, a culinary kitchen and family room were laid out for this bungalow.
Green Features:

Challenges: The challenge was to keep this new residential infill in keeping with the existing structures on the street and within the character of Decatur.

Solutions: Again drawing on the existing architecture of Decatur and weaving in the ‘Greene and Greene’ philosophy this Sullivan Homes Inc historically inspired Craftsman ideally adheres and compliments this residential neighborhood.

Special Details: This home features ribbon windows, Arts & Crafts inspired Interior molding, and a hand-hewn entry door.

Awards: The City of Decatur Historic Preservation Commission honored Sullivan Homes, Inc. with the presentation of the 2008 Design Award recognizing excellence in residential infill design.
