Project Details
Description: The Clairemont - Great Lakes neighborhood was laid out in the early 20th Century. Beginning in 1913 and continuing through to the 1930s, it was developed in sections with Robert H. Paris developing Superior St., Michigan St., Seneca St., Huron St., Champlain St., Erie Ave., Geneva St., Lucerne St. and Parkside Circle. The Clairemont - Great Lakes contains numerous architectural styles with the most common being Craftsman Bungalows inspired by the American Arts and Crafts Movement. This circa 1930s craftsman bungalow was located on one of Decatur’s larger lots but the structure was a small two bedroom, one bath that had dilapidated over the years.

Scope: The scope was to start from the ground up and design and build a home with elements from circa 1930’s architectural aesthetics to exceptional details coupled with modern amenities and functionality that would culminate in a classic American home for young professionals with a family. Finished home has three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a large combination entertainment/kitchen area and a screened in patio.

Green features: Duel high efficiency HVACs, icynene spray foam insulation and high efficiency windows and doors.

Challenges: The challenge was not only to embrace the philosophy of the Craftsman Bungalow which encourages originality, simplicity of form, local natural materials, and the visibility of handicraft but to capture that philosophy in a new structure.

Solutions: Sullivan Homes Inc looked to well-know architects of the early 20th century who focused on bungalows. Greene and Greene was an architectural firm established by brothers, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene. They are widely considered to have brought high-art aesthetics and exquisite craftsmanship to bungalow houses and larger-scale ultimate bungalows. Their style, a synthesis of the Arts & Crafts Movement with Asian influences, a casual, sensibility and obsessive attention to detail, uniquely combined these elements to create an innovative style, a “new and native architecture.”

Special Details: The homes entrance features ‘Greene and Greene’ inspired rose trellis doors creating a warm welcoming that is featured throughout. The natural oak trim, stone and other natural materials add to ‘bringing the outdoors in.’ A large front porch, enclosed patio and bedroom deck adds to the ‘ultimate bungalow’ and provides varying outdoor living experiences.

Awards: The Atlanta Sales and Marketing Council congratulate Sullivan Homes Inc for winning a Gold OBIE in the Single Family Detached $900,000 to $999,999 detached category for the Decatur ultimate bungalow.
